Magazines:Introduction to representation

 1) Write a definition of representation in media studies. Clue: The answer is in the notes above!

description or portrayal of someone in a particular way

2) Now look at the cover of Closer magazine above. List all different types of people and groups represented on the front cover. E.g. women, celebrities, race/ethnicity etc.
They are all English white women, around their thirties and 40s except one English male, who looks about 40.
3) What does The front cover shows that they are only interested in love and kids.

4) Are there any stereotypes you can identify? E.g. women and motherhood; celebrities etc.
A stereotype i see is that they are all women and they are all mothers or becoming mothers
5) Is there anything on the cover that subverts typical stereotypes in the media?
The UKs first gay dad beacuse sterotypically the dad is meant to be masculine but beacuse he is gay, some people may say he is feminine so that subeverts stereotypes.
6) What is the preferred reading of this magazine cover - what do the producers want audiences to think when they see it? The preffered reading is when you ht a certain age, its almost manditory to have a baby because everyone is having 0ne.

7) What is the oppositional reading of this magazine cover - how might someone criticise this magazine cover or be offended by it? Becoming a mother is optional because its a lot of responsibility, so people shouldn't feel forced by society to have kids if they choose not to have any.

8) What are the social and cultural contexts to this magazine cover? What effect might this magazine have on readers or society? In england, most cultures have more kids than the english culture so this maybe trying to battle that stereotype and normalising mainly english women with more kids.
